Your Online Resource for Medicare Insurance: Guiding you along the maze of Medicare

Medicare Advantage Enrollment

There are only certain times you can join, switch, or drop a Medicare Advantage Plan (MA).

  • When you are first eligible for Medicare (7 month period beginning 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ending 3 months after the month you turn 65)
  • If disabled, beginning 3 months before and ending 3 months after the 25th month of disability
  • During the Annual Election Period (AEP), October 15th – December 7th of each year

Additional time to change

If you would like to leave your Medicare Advantage Plan and switch to Original Medicare, you can do this between January 1st – February 14th. During this time you will also be able to add a Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) to your Original Medicare. Changes that cannot be made during this time include switching from one PDP to another, switching from one MA to another, and switching from Original Medicare to a MA Plan.

Under most circumstances, you must remain in your MA Plan for the remainder of the year. There are a few exceptions you may be able to join, switch or drop outside of the above time periods and they include those living in an institution (like a nursing home), those who qualify for Extra Help, and those who move out the plan’s service area. Outside of these exceptions, everyone must keep the plan they signed up for during the AEP and will not be able to change except during that time.
