Medicare Supplement Claims

It is important to understand that approval of your Medicare Supplement claim depends upon the approval of your Medicare claim. If you're in Original Medicare, doctors and suppliers are required by law to file Medicare claims for covered services and supplies you get. You shouldn’t need to file any claims yourself. You should present your Medicare Supplement card along with your Medicare card so your claim for both will be submitted together because the Medicare claim has to be approved first in order for your supplement claim to be paid.

If Medicare does not approve your claim, your Medicare Supplement company will not pay its claim. If you receive notice that either claim was not paid, that would be a good time to call your Medicare Supplement insurance agent who should be happy to assist you in resolving the matter.

For people who use the internet, another great tool to monitor your Medicare Claims is MyMedicare.gov. You simply log onto the Medicare.gov website, and there will be a MyMedicare.gov tab right on the home page. Click on that tab and create your account. You will then have access to all your personal information with Medicare including your claims information. You can look at each claim that has been submitted to Medicare and see its status. This should be very helpful in resolving any claims problems. There are other great benefits available in the MyMedicare.gov website, so take the tour and discover what’s there.

You have the right to appeal any decision about your Medicare services. If Medicare doesn't pay for an item or service you got, or if you aren't given an item or service you think you should get, you can appeal.
